Happy 80th Birthday, SABIR MAJEED! Honor a Living Legend THIS SUNDAY

For 45 years, Sabir Majeed's camera has been our community's memory keeper. From jazz legends at the World Stage to community rallies, from intimate family portraits to historic moments of Black resistance—Sabir documented it all.

Personally, his lens captured some of the most important moments of my career. Those images aren't just photographs—they're our legacy preserved. Let's give this giant his flowers while he can see, feel, and hear our love.

  • Live music & poetry

  • Fashion showcase

  • Good food & great people

  • Stories and memories shared

  • A celebration worthy of our cultural treasure

Snap Foundation Partnership: Securing Our Future

For the past two years, the Snap Foundation has been instrumental in supporting FA-MLI's workforce development initiatives. Their investment made programs like Legendary Nights possible, where students gain real-world experience in audio engineering, event production, and hospitality while earning wages for their work.

Their support has enabled us to:

  • Train 50+ youth in creative industry skills

  • Maintain our 100% graduation rate in core mentorship programming

  • Invest $25,000+ directly in student wages and training

  • Create real career pathways in the creative economy

We're thrilled to celebrate our continued partnership with the Snap Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating pathways into the creative economy for underrepresented youth in Los Angeles.

What this means: More students earning while they learn. Expanded programming. Deeper industry partnerships. Our vision becoming reality.

🎓 UCLA-CDU Fellowship: Expanding Our Reach

Exciting news: Torrence Brannon-Reese has been awarded a second fellowship with UCLA-CDU Dana Center!

This new 3-month program with Dr. Shervington and Dr. Amy Woods focuses specifically on developing healing arts curriculum for young people. We're crafting workshops that combine:

  • Music composition addressing social issues

  • Mindfulness and breathing techniques

  • Art therapy and creative expression

  • Community healing practices

The bigger picture: This fellowship is helping us build the Center for Healing Arts at Charles Drew University—a permanent space where our students can engage with cutting-edge research while earning compensation for their participation.

Everything connects. The mindfulness work I'm doing at Covenant House, the fellowship research, the Legendary Nights program—it's all part of building pathways for our young people to succeed in fields they never imagined possible.
