See A Man, Be a Man expands to New Orleans during our 6th Annual "Da Soul of America" cultural tour

In May, you celebrated with us when the Malcolm X Corridor became official. That 30-year victory gave us momentum.

In October, we took that momentum to New Orleans. Here's what happened: In October, Torrence and Queen Nzingha traveled to New Orleans for a community exchange trip. The goal was to connect South LA youth with New Orleans musicians, organizers, and cultural workers.

On October 28th, they stopped at a local store. Outside, several young people were gathered with no clear plans for the afternoon.

Torrence got out of the car and started a conversation.

He and Queen Nzingha talked with the youth about education, respect, and the importance of mentorship. They explained the See a Man Be a Man program: weekly workshops covering life skills, financial literacy, and career planning. Youth who participate earn $100 stipends for their time and commitment.

Two young men-Michael and Jordan-asked how they could join. Torrence gave them contact information for Dr. Malaika Rumala, an FA-MLl board member traveling with the group. Within an hour, Michael and Jordan had called and texted Dr. Rumala. They wanted to start immediately.

That was just a few weeks ago.

Today, Michael and Jordan attend weekly virtual mentorship sessions from New Orleans. They work with a peer mentor-a college student who graduated from the

They are setting educational goals, building career plans, and learning financial management skills. See a Man Be a Man just launched in New Orleans. What started 32 years ago in South LA now serves youth in two cities. Virtual expansion to additional communities is planned for 2026.

A musical homecoming

On October 26th, Torrence performed with The Delfonics Experience at Café Istanbul before an enthusiastic crowd. The performance brought legendary Philadelphia soul to New Orleans, connecting generations through music. For Torrence, it was a homecoming—returning to his birthplace with a group that defined an era.
